The New Foreign Retirement Community
David Truly first visited Ajijic in 1997 to conduct research on international retirement migration to the Lake Chapala Riviera for his dissertation. He later received his Ph.D. in geography from the University of South Carolina and taught at Central Connecticut State University until returning to Ajijic in 2009 to raise his children. During this time. he taught at the Universidad Autonoma in Guadalajara and also consulted with various private and public groups on tourism and retirement developments. He has conducted numerous studies over the years and advised and collaborated with other students/researchers interested in the positive and negative impacts of international retirement migration. His presentation focuses on socio-economic and political trends in society and their impact on foreign and local communities like Ajijic and the surrounding Lake Chapala Riviera.
