Try questioning THE INEVITABLE!

Euripides* suggested, “Question everything, learn something, answer nothing…”
It is seldom that an adult openly questions what is commonly considered inevitable! Why? Young children question what adults consider inevitable. (Why do we get sick? Why do we die?) Could we adults be overlooking something or misreading the evidence or something else? What could happen if I honestly questioned what most people consider inevitable?

Empowering Women: The Global Panacea

There are few, if any real panaceas (remedies for all difficulties) in the world. However, using Melinda Gates’ “Moment of Lift: How Empowering Women Changes the World” as his guide, (along with selections from several other publications), Dave Ellison will review the evidence demonstrating how educating women, giving them control over their bodies and their marriages (among other reforms) transforms whole societies, cultures, economies, environments… everything.

About Open Circle

For nearly 30 years, the Lake Chapala area has been honored to host Mexico’s longest-standing weekly English language lecture series. Begun in 1995 by volunteers under the title of “New Dimensions” and initially focused on various aspects of spirituality, in 2001 the program became “Open Circle” and was hosted in homes and restaurants. The Lake Chapala Society became Open Circle Ajijic’s permanent home in the early 2000’s and (since 20021) has become an official Lake Chapala Society program.

Mission Statement:

“Open Circle Ajijic provides a supportive environment to gather for social interaction and to improve our understanding of ourselves, our community, and our world. Presentations span a wide range of intellectual, cultural, physical, and spiritual topics. We do not necessarily agree with the ideas and philosophies of our presenters. We encourage you to listen with an open mind and form your own opinions.”

“Euripides* suggested, “Question everything, learn something, answer nothing…”
It is seldom that an adult openly questions what is commonly considered inevitable! Why?

Could we adults be overlooking something or misreading the evidence or something else?
What could happen if I honestly questioned what most people consider inevitable?
Why are we so easily convinced of inevitability? Are we not aware of the power inherent in the gifts we were given? Gifts of independent intent and complete choice? Do we consider our intent to be powerful? Or our choice to truly be complete?
COME AND LEARN ABOUT RESURRECTING YOUR POWER TO QUESTION THE INEVITABLE, FOR EVERYONE’S BENEFIT!”

History of Mariachi - Mark Fogelquist
April 14, 2024

Mark Fogelquist received his BA and MA in Ethnomusicology from UCLA. His master’s thesis (1975) was the pioneering academic work on mariachi music. From 1973 to 1993, he directed Mariachi Uclatlán, one of the Los Angeles area’s leading professional mariachi ensembles. In 1993, Fogelquist moved to Wenatchee, Washington, where he organized the state’s first school mariachi program and mariachi conference, programs which are still alive 30 years later. For his work as an educator and contributor to culture in Washington he received the Governor’s Heritage Award as well as the Reconocimiento Ohtli, the highest award of the Mexican government for individuals contributing to the well being of Mexicans abroad. In 2001 Fogelquist returned to California to teach at Chula Vista High School and San Diego State University where his students won numerous awards and competitions and were honored by the New York Times, the Music Educators National Conference, the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, and the Encuentro Internacional del Mariachi in Guadalajara. Fogelquist has been a presenter, speaker, and instructor at mariachi conferences and festivals around the United States and Mexico. In July 2022, he was inducted into the Mariachi Hall of Fame, the only non-Mexican to receive this honor. He now lives in Ajijic where he is involved with the Escuela de Mariachi “Pedro Rey.”

Smile Network
May 19, 2024

“In 2003, Kim Valentini stepped away from a career as a high-powered corporate sales and marketing executive to evaluate what was missing in her life. Fueled by the desire to find meaning and to be a voice for people who didn’t have one, she launched Smile Network International, which quickly became a global force in the nonprofit world. Two decades later and hundreds of passport stamps later, Kim’s “project,” otherwise known as Smile Network International, has resulted in nearly 100 surgical missions in 13 countries on five continents and more than 4,500 children have received the gift of a life-altering surgery.

Kim has received many honors for her work with Smile Network including the KARE-11 Eleven Who KARE award, Minneapolis Business Journal’s Women in Business and Inkandescent Women Magazine named Kim one of the 100 Amazing Women who are changing the world. In addition to her charitable work, Kim travels the country speaking to corporate and civic organizations, as well as educational institutions and conferences. She tells stories of her life experiences and inspires audiences to dream big, take risks and listen to that little voice inside of yourself to identify your purpose.”
